Finals Fun

The library is sporting primary colors this week.

The appearance of the bright reds, yellows, and blues is not due to a new spring fashion, but rather a longstanding tradition. The colors belong to the Twister board circles, Lego blocks, and Mr. Potato Head accoutrements spread around the library foyer. Finals week has always been a high-stress, low-sleep, and caffeine-buzzed time at Davidson, and these brief seasonal additions are an effort on the part of the library staff to reduce student anxiety.

Late night study sessions (the library is open until 3 am during finals week!) seem to fuel student creativity. The library staff enjoys coming to work each morning and viewing the Mr. Potato Head wardrobe combinations and Lego creations constructed during the night. Mr. Potato Head normally greets each finals week morning with a clothing combination stranger than any Patterson Court party theme, such as cowboy boots, a Santa hat, purse, and Buzz Lightyear wings. The Legos are currently sorted into piles by color, but past architectural visions have approximated cupid’s arrows, robots, elaborate houses, the leaning tower of Pisa, and molecular structures (maybe a study tool for a chemistry exam?)

The usual library coterie of finals fun is joined this semester by a new addition:
Space Travel Hazards. In this NASA-created board game, players move around the board in mini-space ships and attempt to avoid excessive solar radiation by answering a series of true and false questions. Hopefully, avoidance of dangerous cosmic rays will give students a renewed hope in their ability to successfully navigate their final academic projects.
